Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Diagnostic Assessments
Screening and Diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder on the Sunshine Coast
At E&A we follow a comprehensive procedure for the assessment and diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), also referred to as Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC). ASD is a developmental condition that affects how a person interacts with and communicates with others, as well as how they perceive and respond to the world around them.
Autism is considered a "spectrum" disorder because symptoms and challenges can vary widely from person to person. Common characteristics of autism include challenges with social interaction and communication, repetitive behaviours or routines, limited interests or activities, and sensory sensitivities.
Autism is a lifelong condition that typically appears in early childhood and can affect individuals of all genders, races, and ethnicities. There is currently no known cure for autism, but early intervention and appropriate support can help individuals with autism lead fulfilling and meaningful lives.
The duration of an ASD diagnostic assessment can vary from 3 to 5 separate sessions (depending on the age of an individual and the complexity of their presentation). Components of a typical diagnostic process include:
An Initial assessment
Interviews with the individual being assessed and informants (e.g., parent(s), caregiver(s), other friends of family that know the person well)
Behavioural observations of the individual being assessed
Questionnaires
Feedback and recommendations
A detailed report outlining findings
It's important to note the above outline is a general overview of what the diagnostic process may look like. The diagnostic process may vary depending on the individual's age, level of functioning, and other individual factors.
A diagnostic report will be prepared upon completion of the diagnostic process.
